Complaint Alleges Demings Took Improper Aid

Democratic U.S. Rep. Val Demings and her U.S. Senate campaign now face a new election law complaint alleging her campaign accepted illegal soft money cash from a Virginia state political committee operated by former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe.

Americans for Public Trust, a campaign watchdog group, submitted the charges Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission. It states Demings and her campaign violated soft money restrictions in the Federal Election Campaign Act by taking in-kind contributions of fundraising services from McAuliffe’s committee, Common Good Virginia.

Glenn Youngkin defeated McAuliffe last week in the Virginia gubernatorial election.

“By approving and participating in this email solicitation, Representative Demings has accepted an in-kind contribution from an organization not regulated under FECA, in violation of the soft money ban,” the complaint states. It demands the FEC examine the charges and implement any “appropriate sanctions.”

Demings remains a favorite to win the nomination for US Senate in the Democratic campaign to unseat GOP Senator Marco Rubio in the 2022 General Election.
